Pianista, organista, compositor e instrumentista. Nace en Quivicán, el 9 de octubre de 1941. Considerado uno de los mejores pianistas del mundo y, por la crítica especializada mundial, como uno de los cuatro mejores jazzistas del orbe. Desde niño comenzó a tocar piano guiado por su padre, el importante músico Bebo Valdés, ya los 6 años formaliza sus estudios musicales entrando directamente al 4to año de la carrera. A los 14 años inicia su actividad profesional en la orquesta Sabor de Cuba, dirigida por su padre. Fue alumno del Conservatorio Municipal de La Habana, donde trabajó con Ángela Quintana. Fue discípulo más tarde de Zenaida Romeu y Rosario Franco, cuyas influencias considera importantes en su formación musical; graduandose de la Universidad de las Artes (ISA) de la Habana. Antes de los veinte años ya era un afamado pianista, decidiendo luego integrarse a grupos de jazz. En los inicios de la década del 60 formó parte de la orquesta del Teatro Musical de La Habana, donde coincidió en la actividad profesional con Leo Brouwer, Federico Smith y Alberto Alonso. Integró después la Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, fundando posteriormente el proyecto del grupo Irakere, junto con el guitarrista Carlos Emilio Morales. Con esta agrupación, desarrolla una significativa labor de rescate de las raíces de la música cubana, manejadas con nuevos elementos expresivos. Συγχρόνως, για εκατομμύρια ανθρώπους που αγωνίζονταν ενάντια στο ρατσισμό, αποτελούσε πρότυπο και παράδειγμα. Ο μεγάλος χριστιανός αγωνιστής και ανθρωπιστής γεννήθηκε στις 15 Ιανουαρίου 1929 στην Ατλάντα (Γεωργία, ΗΠΑ). Μετά τις θεολογικές και φιλοσοφικές σπουδές του, μεταξύ των άλλων και στο πανεπιστήμιο Χάρβαρντ, απέκτησε τον διδακτορικό τίτλο και στις δυο επιστήμες. Αργότερα, πολλά αμερικανικά πανεπιστήμια του απένειμαν τον τίτλο τιμής ένεκεν. Πολλές προτάσεις αμερικανικών πανεπιστημίων που του πρόσφεραν έδρα διδασκαλίας, τις αρνήθηκε. Αντί γι' αυτό, ανέλαβε ιεροκήρυκας σε μια βαπτιστική εκκλησία στο Montgomery της Αλαμπάμα. Όταν, προς το τέλος του 1955 στο Μοntgomery, συνελήφθη η μαύρη ράφτρα Rosa Parks επειδή αρνήθηκε να παραχωρήσει τη θέση της, στην αστική συγκοινωνία, που προοριζόταν μόνο για λευκούς, ο King οργάνωσε ένα μποϊκοτάζ του μαύρου πληθυσμού για τις αστικές συγκοινωνίες. Διήρκεσε 380 μέρες και έληξε με τον τερματισμό του ρατσισμού στις αστικές συγκοινωνίες της πόλης. Το 1957, χάρη στην ισχυρή προσωπικότητά του, το χάρισμα λόγου και το οργανωτικό ταλέντο που διέθετε, τον ονόμασαν πρόεδρο μιας ειρηνικής χριστιανικής οργάνωσης, που αγωνιζόταν για τις φυλετικές και άλλες διακρίσεις.
